Linux on a PlayStation 3 console is completely possible if drive installed on the console's hard. Many Linux distributions are compatible with the PS3 console, especially the more popular distributions like Ubuntu, Yellow Dog Linux (Sony actually recommends the use of these distributions), OpenSUSE, Fedora, Debian and Gentoo.
If you think it is illegal to do, or it will void your warranty, you are wrong. In fact, Sony used the fact that theirPlayStation 2 console in its marketing campaign Linux. They even released a PS2 Linux kit in 2002 that allowed consumers turn their PS2 in a personal computer console. Sony again allows for this and allows easy installation of Linux by including an option in the XMB to other operating systems like Linux install.

There are so many cases in which users to unnecessary risks, that nothing goes wrong and then get upset when things do not get to. Do not fall for the false security of the installation in front of you! Only a backup of yoursaved games and everything you want is not lost on a USB drive.
Note that if you try to install Linux on the PS3 Slim, you can not do this. Sony stopped offering the "OtherOS install" option for the PS3 Slim as a cost saving measure. The PS3 Slim as an affordable option, and for Sony to keep the driver to Linux support has been created, it would cost too much.
